Seal’s Slump to Mickey’s Masterclass
Gilman is happy to welcome to campus Mr. Abel Mickey Watson, also known as Coach Mickey, who will be assuming the role of head Varsity Soccer coach. Coach Mickey has a rigorous record as an experienced player, having played division one soccer for four years at Loyola University, Maryland, followed by a graduate year at Syracuse University. At Loyola, he became the first-ever player to become captain as a sophomore and went on to retain that position for the rest of his time. As a coach, he brings a similar level of extensive experience, having worked as an assistant coach at Friends School since 2017, where his knowledge and love for the game grew immensely. Other coaching jobs for Coach Mickey include having served as an assistant coach for Episcopal Academy and having coached multiple club soccer programs, such as FC Delco in Philadelphia.
Due to his clear love for the game of soccer, leadership abilities, and professional experience, Gilman is thrilled to welcome Coach Watson. His clear passion for the game and his deep commitment to Gilman are highlighted when he explained: “I am looking to build something special at Gilman.” His excitement for the upcoming season has been infectious to the players thus far. Captain Bashir Abou' 26 said, “He’s very intense, and he seems like he wants a good change for the program.” Another returning varsity player, Bobby Cheswick, said, “He has a very impressive history in the sport of soccer, so I am very excited for what the team can do.” Coach Mickey has shown that he is ready to give this program everything he has by leaving his house at 4:30 am every Wednesday in order to make it to the weekly morning practices on time. Watson is committed to “not just developing great players, but shaping young men of character who align with Gilman’s mission.” With his experience both as a high-level player and coach, Watson is poised to make the 2025 season one to remember.
