Student And Teacher Opinion On Phone Policy

The Gilman News recently sought out student quotes regarding the phone policy. Here are the students’ responses:

“Using Snapchat on my computer sucks because you have to log onto the website before school and then use the crappy camera.” - Anonymous Freshman

“When they take our phones away, a part of ourselves gets taken away.” - Anonymous Freshman

“In America, it feels unfair to punish everyone just because a few people mess around with their phones” - Isaac Ng ‘29

“If a student uses their phone for things other than school during class periods, there will be natural consequences to accompany that, such as a worse understanding of the subject and a premature dopamine spike, which causes worse attentiveness. It’s not Gilman’s primary job to keep students accountable for themselves. The expectation is that in upper school, you've reached a certain level of maturity where you no longer need to be taught how to behave.”

- Gil Zerhouni ‘29

“I don't think that it’s done anything.” - Charlie Marbury ‘29

“My TikTok lags on my computer.” - Felice Nestico 29’

“It’s excessive. I can’t use Apple Pay at the store.” - Kiran Milak ‘28

“Phones are how we save our wonderful memories. Looking through my camera roll from my old school is how I reminisce.” - Patrick Evermann ‘29

“No comment.” - Colter McPhail ‘29

“As a senior, going in there and randomly grabbing your phone is like taking candy from a baby.” - Cabot White ‘26

“I don’t mind the phone policy, but I REALLY mind the dress policy.” - Billy Smyth ‘26

“I LOVE IT!!!” - Mrs. Knapp

“Taking our phones away is like stripping a Zebra of its stripes.” - Anonymous Freshman

“The phone policy doesn't bother me, but what is really enraging is how I can’t wear a crewneck.” - Anonymous Freshman
