Say “Hello” to Mr. Smythe

This year, the History Department adds to its ranks Mr. William Smythe. Mr. Smythe will teach U.S. History, American Government, and one section of French II.

Born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia, Mr. Smythe attended Norfolk Academy, where he played varsity soccer and lacrosse. In 2024, he graduated from the University of Virginia with dual degrees in Government and French. During his time at UVA, Smythe, a Jefferson Scholar and sports enthusiast, served as student manager of the men’s lacrosse team, concentrating on its social media and scouting. In addition to writing for the school newspaper, The Cavalier Daily, Smythe created a college sports blog, Power Five Press, and started a Virginia-centered podcast, "34 and Counting."

After graduating, Smythe earned the Hardy Fellowship, a UVA-sponsored program that provides recent graduates the opportunity to teach and live abroad. This fellowship took him across the pond to work at Bryanston, a boarding school in Dorset, on the south coast of England. During his year at Bryanston, Mr. Smythe taught British History and American Politics. He also served as a resident at one of the boarding houses, looking out for over sixty boys.

When applying for teaching positions back in the States, Mr. Smythe, who was familiar with Gilman through his experience in the lacrosse world, was drawn to Gilman’s close-knit community, all-boys environment, and relative proximity to his hometown, Norfolk. As Mr. Smythe explained, it’s "definitely appealing to work at a place like Gilman.”

New to Baltimore, Mr. Smythe, a huge seafood fan, is eager to try all the great marine restaurants in Baltimore and is looking forward to garnering restaurant recommendations from students. Closer to home, Mr. Smythe is excited to experience “the strong school spirit here at Gilman,” specifically the “big rivalry games, football in the fall and lacrosse in the spring.” In his free time, Mr. Smythe enjoys playing pickleball, golf, and tennis, following college sports, and serving as a contributor to the Virginia Cavaliers on Sports Illustrated website.

Please join the News in welcoming Mr. Smythe to the Gilman Community and wishing him a fantastic first year!
