How Do You Do, Dr. Leiner?

The Gilman Community and Upper School Math Department is excited to welcome Dr. Leah Leiner!. Originally from the other side of the United States, Dr. Leiner grew up in the Golden City of San Francisco. She then attended Bard College, where she graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics. Continuing to dive into the subject, she attended graduate school at Temple University, earning a PhD in Mathematics. Furthermore, during her time at Temple University, she taught college-level math courses. Moreover, Dr. Leiner used her math expertise to give back to the community, like when she volunteered to help teach high school students math and tutored incarcerated individuals through the Bard Prison Initiative. Additionally, she is well-versed in a wide variety of web development and coding languages, such as Java.

At Gilman, Dr. Leiner will be teaching BC Geometry, BC Calculus, and Introduction to Combinatorics. While these courses will be challenging, Dr. Leiner describes her approach to teaching as, “I want learning to be fun, so I try to give interactive group work in class. My goal is to cultivate a collaborative environment where students feel comfortable exploring math.”

Dr. Leiner is excited to be a part of the Gilman community, saying, “I'm looking forward to meeting the students!” So, please join The News in welcoming Dr. Leiner, who will be both an excellent teacher within the Math department as well as a great community member, to Gilman!
