Finding the First-Rate Film

The Gilman community is filled with a diversity of students, faculty, and alumni, all with their own unique interests…and unique movie tastes! In a quest to find out the community’s favorite film, the News took to the hallways to figure out which movies are favorites on campus.

After interviewing 50 different students, three movies stand out as far superior to the rest: Cars 1, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Home Alone. Students voted for 36 different movies, but these three were the most common.

To better understand these results, we contacted Keating Hoffman ‘27, a movie connoisseur, who had a word for each of these movies. When asked about Cars 1, he said, “You would want to watch this movie because it has a good story of redemption and is very nostalgic.” For The Wolf of Wall Street, he remarked, “It’s one of Scorsese's greatest directed films because it embodies a shady kind of businessmen [who] were prominent in the 80s and 90s.” Lastly, he finished, “Home Alone is simply a great Christmas movie that is timeless, and no matter how old you are, it's still a good watch.”

Overall, the results of the Gilman Student Body demonstrate that, even in the diversity of our community, we can bond over simple delights. Whether you like horror, thriller, or action movies, The News hopes that you watched a movie over break that brought you a sense of joy. And if you are looking for a recommendation, the student body has three for you!
