Sayonara, Mr. Scott!
Over the past six years, Mr. Scott has left a mark on the Gilman community through his teaching English and history, coaching lacrosse and squash, and recording his Path to Follow podcast. Sadly, Mr. Scott is departing Baltimore to continue his educational career at Brunswick School, a college preparatory located in Connecticut.
Mr. Scott grew up in Philidelphia, Pennsylvania, attending Conestoga High School. A highly talented lacrosse player, Mr. Scott went on to play for the men’s team at Harvard University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in English before graduating and joining the Penn Fellowship Program as a fellow at Gilman.
Since his arrival as a Penn fellow in 2018, Mr. Scott has worked hard to instill curiosity in his students and get them excited for class. He prioritizes and values his relationships with his students, believing that finding the balance between being a friend and being a teacher is the key to being a successful educator. He believes, "humanizing yourself as a teacher is actually more important than the subject matter sometimes." Furthermore, Mr. Scott enjoys the freedom that Gilman provides him, and in return, he gives this same freedom to his students. Mason Van Dyke '25, a student in one of Mr. Scott's English classes, commented, "The freedom that he provides in his class allows you to create your own relationship with and explore the books on your own, and I think that's really increased my passion for English."
Moreover, Mr. Scott's impact goes beyond his classroom. His advisee, Emmitt Sherlock '25, says, "he really cares to get to know each person he's met, and I think that's what makes him special as a teacher at Gilman." Dylan Buchalter '25, another advisee of Mr. Scott, says their bond is one he "will cherish forever." Then, on the field, Mr. Scott motivated his players to work hard. He served as a JV lacrosse coach, and because he recently played the sport, players felt that they could relate to him.
In addition to being an exemplary coach, Mr. Scott is a lifelong learner. His curiosity is best seen in his Path to Follow Podcast. The Path to Follow Podcast was one of Mr. Scott's favorite things to work on while at Gilman. On over 160 episodes, he sat down with various students, teachers, and even some celebrities like John Harbaugh to talk about Gilman, books, and aspects of their lives. The podcast allowed him and others to learn more about the Gilman community and the people who are a part of it.
Over the past six years, Mr. Scott has made an effort to bring the Gilman community even closer than it was before his arrival. Whether interviewing members of the Tri-School Community in his Path to Follow Podcast, coaching various sports, or organizing faculty basketball games, he has always been involved in building and maintaining relationships.
Mr. Scott will miss all the relationships he has built with both students and members of the faculty, the podcast, and working in the art studio during afternoon blocks. Thank you, Mr. Scott, for all of the work you put into making this school a great place, and we wish you luck in Connecticut!
