Restroom Rankings
Have you ever wondered what makes a bathroom good? Is it the privacy, the lighting, the amenities, or perhaps the location? In a recent survey of Upper School students, one of Gilman’s most pressing questions was finally addressed: What is the best restroom across the Upper School campus?
After surveying 41 students from all four grades, the third-floor Carey Hall bathroom took the top spot with 31.7% of the vote, praised by many for its locked-door privacy. As Cullen Keelty ‘29 summed it up, “The third floor is the best bathroom simply because of the unique privacy you can’t find anywhere else.” However, not everyone agreed on its throne-worthy status; some called it “overrated” and even “mainstream,” dampened by its ominous yellow hue. Carey Hall’s second floor followed closely behind at 24.4%, praised for its openness and luminous qualities. “The second-floor bathroom has the best natural lighting,” said Billy Smyth ‘26. In third place was the Carey Hall Library Bathroom, another private option; many students did criticize it for the noise control, though, and it received only a handful of votes despite its sleek and spacious design.
Outside of the top three, the first floor of Carey Hall, right next to Centennial Hall, came in as the underrated “sleeper pick." The Hive bathroom, hidden away in the basement, was praised for its secludedness. However, students noted that they have poor cell reception down there. Both Lumen Center bathrooms landed nicely in the middle of the pack, while the Science building bathroom came in last. Its unpleasant smell earned it nearly unanimous criticism.
Whether you prefer sunlight or solitude, Gilman students have made one thing clear: the third-floor Carey Hall bathroom continues to flourish as the premier bathroom on the upper school campus.
