Club Spotlight - Improv Club
For two years now, Improv Club has been performing improvised comedy. They meet in room 310 of Carey Hall once every two weeks. Their club leader is Dylan Moyar ‘26, and their faculty advisor is Mr. Larry Malkus, who also teaches a senior elective about comedy. The club was founded in 2024 by Gabe Zerhouni ‘25, who graduated last year, and it used to be advised by Ms. Kelsey Carper.
During their meetings, they “play out scenes with our characters, trying to inject it with honesty and fun,” according to Moyar. Moyar also commented that Improv Club is a great place “to break out of a busy, work-driven community at school” and “a platform to laugh, to make friends, to forge relationships, and to define what is human.” According to Nick Guthrie ‘27, the club does “improv activities, usually funny stuff,” as well as comedy skits. “Nothing is planned beforehand,” he commented, “because it’s improv, and we comment and just enjoy each other’s performances.”
An average meeting for Improv Club will always have a theme, oftentimes some sort of game. For example, Tim Yoo ‘27 mentioned one of his favorite games is called change: “where two people go up on stage and are given a theme, the first person speaks and then the second has to say the opposite of what they've just said.” Nick, when asked about what he had gotten from his participation, said, “Just fun with my friends...a very enjoyable experience.” Even though he did not think it would be something he would love, after a year as a part of the club, “it’s been very enjoyable.”
